Alloy - All from the Heart

Jamesons Pinapple Maple Sour
Alloy was recently listed by Avenue Magazine Calgary as number six in their Top Ten Restaurants in Calgary for 2012. We chose Alloy on the recommendation of my girlfriend @bluebirdsy who’d been there once before and enjoyed it. The restaurant itself is located in an industrial area off McLeod Trail, in a building that used to house t-shirts (according to @blubirdsy). The building itself doesn’t look like a restaurant from the outside, but once you enter, it’s a beautifully decorated room filled with elegant white booths, cherry blossoms, and pink lit walls.

Creole Envie - Cooked with Love

Fried Chicken, Corn Muffin, Green Pepper Jelly
and Mashed Potato
New on the #yegfood scene is Creole Envie, owner and Chef Danielle specializes in creole cuisine. I heard about her originally through miscellaneous tweets @foodkarmablog and @baconhound were sending to each other. I finally had to ask what the heck was Creole Envie, and the next thing I knew I was DM-ing a stranger to order gumbo, corn muffins and pralines.

Creole Envie is currently focused on catering, she has been trying to spread the word of her food by offering weekly specials through Twitter for delivery or pick up. She can soon be found at Highlands Farmers Market as well.

Eat Alberta - A Fun Way to Learn About Food!

Apron on! Ready for Eat Alberta!
In it's second year, Eat Alberta is a one day conference that includes a mix of hands-on and demonstration workshops lead by leaders in our local food community. Bringing together like-minded participants who have an interest in learning more about food.

Firstly, congratulations to the 2012 Eat Alberta organizing committee, Allan Suddaby, Mack Male, Ming, Nicole, Sharon Yeo, Su and Valerie Lugonja! It looked and felt like a huge success from the eyes of this first time attendee! Held for the first time at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), they offered 20 different sessions! Although I had a hard time deciding, I did finally narrow down my choices to Artisan Cheese Making with Alan Roote, Cut Like A Chef: Knife Skills with Kevin Kent, Gnocchi Making 101 with Kathryn Joel and Sourdough 101: Basic Yeast Farming with Owen Petersen.

Brunch Italian Style at Borgo Trattoria (CLOSED)

Much needed coffee
When I was seeking places to eat in Calgary, my girlfriend @bluebirdsy had listed off a whole slew of possible places, including Borgo Trattoria. What really tweaked my interest was that they offered brunch, and their brunch looked different than other places since they stay true to their focus and offer brunch Italian style. @bluebirdsy picked us up bright and early at 10:20am on Saturday morning, as Borgo Trattoria doesn’t take reservations. Luckily we arrived even before brunch started so were able to get a table and enjoy some much needed coffee.

Poor Customer Service Taints Experience at Anju Restaurant

Tea Cup from Starbucks - chipped and worse for ware
Friday night dinner was the one meal we had had trouble deciding where to dine. With so many great restaurants in Calgary, narrowing it down to a single choice seemed almost impossible. However, we wound up choosing Anju after seeing and hearing so much about them from our Twitter friends who were either from Calgary or had dined there while they happened to be in town. Touted as a Korean fusion restaurant, opened by Edmontonian, Roy Oh, we were curious to see if it was as good as everyone else who had been said it was.
