Dependable Kyoto Japanese Cuisine

Bean sprouts and miso soup
Kyoto Japanese Cuisine Downtown is one of our default places to go whenever we want moolicious, quick meal at a reasonable price, particularly at lunch. It’s also open on days when a lot of other places are closed. Although they have an extensive sushi and sashimi menu, along with other items, we usually get bento boxes as they offer great value, giving you the opportunity to try a little bit of everything. At dinner, the bento boxes tend to be a bit more expensive, but instead of having a set bento box, you get to choose the items you want in it.

Bento Box C
On that particular day, I opted for bento box combination C – C stands for chicken teriyaki. I got the usual sushi substituted for Isobe rolls for a few more cow coins, and it also comes with salad, bean sprouts, miso soup, and one additional item that changes daily.

The bean sprouts are lightly seasoned, crispy and refreshing to start the meal. The miso soup is hot, inviting, and comforting on this rainy day and the only thing I wish for is a few more pieces of tofu.

Isobe Rolls
The mystery item today is a crispy deep fried crab meat croquette with some type of sweet sauce on top. The exterior is very crunch, unfortunately the crab within tastes a bit overcooked. The chicken teriyaki is cooked perfectly, with a crispy coating, but still very moist chicken within, lightly coated with teriyaki sauce. The Isobe rolls are lightly tempura battered but the roll instantly melts in your mouth. The combination of salmon, tuna, and avocado provide a creamy texture that is delectable. To give it an extra kick, I dip it in a mixture of soy sauce and wasabi, heavy on the wasabi to make sure it’s more hot than salty.

Service here is quick and efficient, without rushing. We happily leave with leftovers for later, and satisfied without having paid only $35 including tip for two humans and a bovine. Definitely a great way to eat out without breaking the bank.

  2. I like the traditional Japanese restaurants. My favorite here in California is Zaisho. The ambiance is authentic. We dined with Sake and assorted entrees under the clout of a shoji screen. It was great. Salmon sushi was amazing.

  3. Isobe rolls are one of those dishes that still seem healthy despite being covered in batter fried. I'm really craving for one right now.
