Hot Fudge Addiction at Village Ice Cream

When we visited Village Ice Cream for the first time in September 2012, we were instantly impressed and made sure to visit as many times as we could muster during our weekend there. With a solid line up of ice cream flavours they always offer and a few rotating flavours including dairy free sorbets, trying all the flavours we wanted in one weekend wasn’t an easy task! You can taste anything you’d like before committing and ice creams can come served in a cup or a homemade waffle cone. For hardcore addicts, they have pints for sale in their freezer as well.

When we decided to visit Calgary again, we knew that we would have to try to fit in a few visits to Village Ice Cream again. This time around we knew that even though they sell their ice cream by the scoop, we could ask to have multiple flavors scooped to make up one scoop.
If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll know that I’m a hot fudge addict! I’ll get hot fudge no matter the whether and anywhere I can get it. So imagine how excited I was to visit Village Ice Cream on this trip and to find out they had home made hot fudge! Unlike at places such as Marble Slab Creamery or Dairy Queen, their hot fudge wasn't thick and gloopy, and they give me a generous ladle full of it! It caressed every morsel of ice cream, was just the perfect amount for two scoops of ice cream, and didn’t overwhelm any of the flavors I tried it with including vanilla bean, salted caramel, chocolate or Phil and Sebastian’s coffee.  I even sampled their oaxacan chili chocolate ice cream which was made with coconut milk, making it vegan friendly, was no less tasty, rich and creamy than their regular offerings.

They also had ice cream sandwiches now in vanilla or salted caramel, which could be enjoyed there or taken home for later. The chocolate cookie was the perfect texture, just crisp enough to hold together the ice cream sandwich, yet soft enough to bite into without it squishing the ice cream out when you did or sliding off to the side. Although it had a very mild chocolate taste, it was just enough so that it added to the sandwich without detracting from the ice cream within.

Both days we went, the weather was vastly different. One day was only 14C (it felt like 12C according to my weather app) with winds blowing at 28km/hour. Yet there were probably over a dozen people in the store when we got there and another dozen that came in after us. Yet more people arrived via car as we left! The next day the skies were clear, no wind was blowing and it was sunny. When we got there, there was only a small handful of people there, but shortly after we settled down outside to eat, a steady stream of cars pulled into their lot and a line up formed quickly out their door. With each car that left, treats in hand, another soon came to take their place. Calgarians love Village Ice Cream, regardless of the weather!

So do yourself a favor and hit Village Ice Cream next time you’re in Calgary, regardless the weather, and bring yourself back a pint if you're driving! They will be there and they’re open late, a real bonus if you’re staying in downtown Calgary. I can’t wait for my next visit as I hear they will be adding sundaes to the menu shortly! I only wish we could have a location in Edmonton, but then again, I’d be really really fat, broke and fighting a serious hot fudge addiction if they did…  So maybe it’s best enjoyed whenever I can manage to visit Calgary, but I'll be yearning for Village Ice Cream every time I eat a hot fudge sundae here, knowing it just isn't quite as good as Village Ice Cream.
