La Boulange - Bistro Style Elevated
Ricotta Ravioli |
There were several La Boulange locations in downtown San Francisco, so I opted to try out the one located in the Westfield Center. La Boulange du Dome had ample seating and offers a variety of food that extended beyond pastries. They had cheese and charcuterie plates, sandwiches, and even pasta. The best part was that in addition to coffee, tea and other non alcoholic beverages, they also had alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine and even sparkling wine!

Edo Elves Giveaway!
Since the holiday season is so near, I thought this uplifting story about Edo Japan sending elves out into Edmonton to perform random acts of kindness would be appropriate to get everyone into the holiday cheer mood! Little known fact, Edo Japan is an Alberta made venture, started in 1979 in Calgary to make fresh and hot Japanese Teppan-style cooking accessible to all diners, by placing this dining concept in food courts and suburban shopping malls.

On Saturday, September 28 around 2:00pm, a beloved stuffed toy dog, named Winston von Bark, was lost on the corner of Governor Nicholls and French Market Place in the French Quarter area of New Orleans. Moolicious at Naanolicious
Craisin Paapri |
Naanolicious is located right next to The Princess, and the space itself although not extremely large is fairly large for many other establishments on Whyte Ave. After perusing the menu we opted to try a few small plates to share. First the Bhel Puri was a salad of sorts with crispy bits of sev, toasted rice and tossed in a mildly acidic dressing. It had a crunchy texture, with a hint of brightness from the acid and finishing with a mild heat. This was hoof down my favorite dish of the night.

Fulfilling and Flakey Fish at Fish and Chipper
Haddock Fish and Chips |
Lo and behold, the Fish and Chipper in Leicester Square, in the hustle and bustle of people buying and selling tickets to West End musicals lay a small and incredibly busy fish and chips restaurant. Although it’s listed as being in Covent Garden, it’s really just East off Leicester Square, between Leicester Square and Charring Cross Road. If you head East, you’ll find it located between two half off ticket booths, just past the Burger King on the North East side of Leicester Square. People were lined up waiting for tables, while others opted to simply get take out, with the latter being cheaper as there is a surcharge for dining in. Thankfully since we were such a small group, we were able to get a seat fairly quickly.

Plow & Harvest Sneak Peek Event - Win Tickets! (CLOSED)
A few weeks ago, a friend of the female human’s called to invite us personally to the Plow & Harvest VIP Preview on August 15th, a restaurant that he was involved with. Plow & Harvest will focus on comfort food, using and promoting local ingredients, but with an updated twist served in a casual environment. We are looking forward to attending and seeing the tractor that he had to track down as dĂ©cor for the restaurant! Although we’ve been told no one, with the possibility of Moo, is allowed to ride it.

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Heaven from Blue Giraffe Creamery
Blue Giraffe Creamery Truck |
Avery, who is currently studying entrepreneurship and still has one semester left in school was inspired by her sister, who told her of a store in Australia that she visited that made ice cream only with liquid nitrogen. Wanting to get her feet work on starting her own business, she decided that a liquid nitrogen ice cream truck would be a unique and inexpensive way to start her own business.

Boo & Moo Bites: Smashingly Delectable Burgers at Smashburger
Smashburger Canadiana Decorations |
Smashburger is a franchise started in 2007 in the United States. The franchise gets its name from the way that they actually cook the burgers. All of their burger patties are made from 100% certified Angus feeb, rolled into a big meatball. They cook the patties to order, so when a burger is ordered, they butter the grill and smash the meatball onto the 400 degree grill with a special tool they developed. Cooking them in this fashion with the butter caramelizes the bottom of the burger and creates a seared exterior that helps keep the juices in. The Sherwood Park location would be their first in the Edmonton area and their third location in Alberta with the other two located in Calgary. In fact, Alberta has the only Canadian franchise of Smashburger thus far.

Bully Food Truck Deserves Your Lunch Money
Bully Mac and Cheese |
Bully Food Truck opened last summer, touting their fare as gourmet comfort food - basically your childhood favorites all grown up! Their slogan “Give me your lunch money” is apt considering I bought one of everything on one particular lunch hour and found almost everything was hearty and moolicious. The day I went, they already had a considerable line up that had formed immediately after opening.

Mr Moo's Adventures Second Anniversary
Kara and Nevin Fenske Food Angels |
I thought that I would share a few of my highlights from the last year with you all.
- Female Human’s Hernia Surgery – In May 2012, the female human had abdominal hernia surgery after two years of waiting and was unable to go anywhere or eat much of anything for two weeks. She was in so much pain the first week of surgery that it was a choice between taking pain killers that made her so nauseous that she wasn’t hungry or would throw up if she ate (not a good thing to do when you’ve just had surgery on your abdomen) or not taking them and being in so much pain that she wasn’t hungry. The only thing she managed to keep down was bits of bland unbuttered toast or saltines. Luckily for her, after talking with the male human, angels Kara and Nevin Fenske of Drift Food Truck started making her bread sandwiches – basically toasted buns with the same spread they use on their pork belly sandwiches - allowing her to eat something that wasn’t so disgustingly bland that she wanted to throw up. It helped her get and keep her strength up enough to start getting off the couch and moving around on her own, with her first visit to the outside world of course being to Drift to thank them.

La Taqueria Trio at Mucho Burrito Muy Bruto
La Taqueria Trio |
Mucho Burrito is based out of Mississauga, Ontario, hailing itself as the new alternative to Mexican food and as “one of the hottest restaurant concepts to enter Canada.” Their concept being made to order Mexican food, allowing diners to choose whether they would like a burrito, taco or quesadilla, whether they’d like a small or large portion, white or whole wheat burrito, what toppings and sauces they’d like, and so on. Although it might have been a unique concept in 2006 when they first started operations, it’s hardly unique now with competitors like Taco Del Mar and Burrito Libre now commonplace in Edmonton.

Whimsical Delights at The Fat Duck
The Fat Duck |
The restaurant is in the small town of Bray, meaning if you’re coming from London that you have to take a train from Paddington Station to Maidenhead, then either walk or take a taxi to Bray. When we pulled up in front of The Fat Duck, we saw a small, white, unremarkable building with nothing to indicate that it was The Fat Duck, except the easily recognizable logo for the restaurant, the fork, knife and spoon.

A Posthumous Review of 104 Street Grill (CLOSED)
Seared scallops, boar bacon vinaigrette, wilted spinach and shallots |
We were invited to give 104 Street Grill a try when they first opened and they generously sent us a $50 certificate to encourage us to come for a visit. Unfortunately, they opened just before I went on my whirlwind tour of Europe and there was no way to squeeze it into an already busy schedule. However, they generously let us utilize the certificate after our return, once we had recuperated from eating out more in a month than we generally do in a year!
Occupying the former home of Ric’s Grill, the dimly lit room was filled with worn, dark wood tables and comfortable looking booth seating. We opted to start with the seared scallops, boar bacon vinaigrette, wilted spinach and shallots. The boar bacon was smoky and slightly sweet, but tended to stick together and had a somewhat chewy texture, which unfortunately stuck to my teeth and I wished that it had been cooked until it was crispy. The vinaigrette tasted nice but was a tad too acidic for my taste and the scallops were sadly watery tasting and chewy.

A Revist of Pinkberry
Frozen Yogurt parfait |
Although I had been to Pinkberry’s grand opening in West Edmonton Mall, I hadn’t had the opportunity to visit them again since then. I was curious to see what their prices and regular portions looked like. Since I had a $20 Groupon for Pinkberry, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to review the real experience.
It turned out that $20 at Pinkberry was quite a lot, as it allowed us to order two large Pinkberry’s with toppings, as well as a fruit parfait. The amount of frozen yogurt they put into the cup is quite generous and the amount of toppings they put in is only limited by the space available that isn’t already filled with frozen yogurt. Personally, I would’ve loved it if they’d put a little less frozen yogurt in and left a bit more room for toppings.

Gourmet Goodness at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay
Amuse bouche of chilled tomato, radish, fresh ricotta, and cucumber |
Upon entering, the space was simple yet elegant, and far more bright and airy than his other restaurant, Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, which we had dined at on our last visit to London. We were easily the youngest diners in the restaurant that particular lunch hour, but we were happy to be seated off to the side with no potential arms deals occurring around us…. No, not kidding you, as our previous experience at the Claridges location kept us entertained all evening as we overheard the conversation on the table behind us, which sounded like an arms deal. Other friends we know have had a similar experience at the Royal Hospital Road location. We opted for the tasting menu, and I started the meal with what was quickly becoming my new vice, a glass of vintage champagne, in this particular case, Charles Heidsieck.
