The 2nd YEG Bacon Day Dinner was hosted at
Lux Steakhouse by
@zoomjer. The first ever
YEGBaconCamp was last year and featured a bacon ice cream showdown between
Chef Shufelt and
Chef Cowan, with
Chef Cowan emerging as the victor.

This year's dinner featured a no holds bar bacon dessert challenge, once again between
Chef Shufelt and
Chef Cowan. $20 from each ticket was donated to the
Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, with the staff graciously donating their gratuity from the evening as well, raising a whopping $635! So moovealous of the staff to do that!
I'll let the photos do the talking this time around as everything tasted amazing and I was far too busy gorging myself in porcine delights, and enjoying the wonderful company of my date for the evening,
@CynthiaFawcett, to bother writing too much. Note that everything either had bacon in it, was cooked with bacon fat, or had bacon fat in it (ie. substituting butter with bacon fat).
Be warned, your arteries might clog just viewing the following drool worthy photos! If you missed attending this year, don't despair! Save the date next year, Saturday of Labour Day weekend!

Everyone started with bacon truffled popcorn, following swiftly with a chacuterie plate including bacon jam/foie gras terrine, bacon pastrami, kobe pastrami, cured pork belly and surely other items I missed hearing described as I hungrily dug in. The chacuterie was all delicious, a mix of juicy, smokey, flavorful and rich tasting meats. Oh and yes, that is a bacon Cesar with bacon vodka beside me. |
|
Iceberg lettuce salad with tomatoes and prosciutto - a nice light (sort of) start to the evening. |
|
Huge moo-ing plate for our mains! |
|
Ready! Give it to me! |
|
Cauliflower - so creamy |
|
Cassoulet |
|
Bacon truffled cream of corn - always a winner with hints of bacon in the cream |
|
Salmon - incredibly soft, moist, melt in your mouth, accompanied by a bacon chipotle hollandaise |
|
Kobe eye of round (eek!) - humans said it was amazingly tender |
|
Defeated after the mains... but oh wait, there's 2 desserts! |
|
Chef Cowan's Bacon Bread Pudding with creme anglaise and bacon butterscotch sauce - delectably sweet and rich |
|
Chef Shufelt's winning dessert - brioche toasted in bacon fat, topped with blue cheese and a bacon and fig jam. A very savory dessert, but a great balance between the tangy blue cheese and mildly sweet and smokey fig and bacon jam. |
