Much needed coffee |
When I was seeking places to eat in Calgary, my girlfriend
@bluebirdsy had listed off a whole slew of possible places, including
Borgo Trattoria. What really tweaked my interest was that they offered brunch, and their brunch looked different than other places since they stay true to their focus and offer brunch Italian style.
@bluebirdsy picked us up bright and early at 10:20am on Saturday morning, as
Borgo Trattoria doesn’t take reservations. Luckily we arrived even before brunch started so were able to get a table and enjoy some much needed coffee.
We tried to stay away from anything that looked even remotely like a traditional Western brunch and wound up ordering the baked “
pandoro” bread with
buffalo mozzarella melt and a side of scrambled eggs, the
tagliatelle with smoked bacon and
grana cheese sauce and the ricotta and caramelized onion filled
crespelles.

Crespelles and don't I look good in glasses? |
The baked Pandora bread melted in your mouth and had a hint of sweetness from the balsamic glaze, topped with plump tomatoes and melty, gooey buffalo mozzarella, we couldn’t get enough of it! The tagliatelle with smoked bacon and a creamy grana cheese sauce felt more like I was eating lunch or dinner than brunch. However, the egg noodles were lightly coated with the very creamy cheese sauce, with the bacon adding just a hint of saltiness to the rich and immensely filling dish. Lastly the clear winner was the ricotta and caramelized onion filled crespelles, topped with brown butter, sage, maple syrup and prosciutto. The ricotta and onions were pureed together resulting in a mildly sweet and immensely creamy and smooth filling that immediately had us wondering how we could replicate these at home.
Overall impressions were mootastic and I only wished that we were in Calgary longer so I could return to try their lunch and dinner offerings, not to mention another plate of those crespelles.
