Creole Envie - Cooked with Love

Fried Chicken, Corn Muffin, Green Pepper Jelly
and Mashed Potato
New on the #yegfood scene is Creole Envie, owner and Chef Danielle specializes in creole cuisine. I heard about her originally through miscellaneous tweets @foodkarmablog and @baconhound were sending to each other. I finally had to ask what the heck was Creole Envie, and the next thing I knew I was DM-ing a stranger to order gumbo, corn muffins and pralines.

Creole Envie is currently focused on catering, she has been trying to spread the word of her food by offering weekly specials through Twitter for delivery or pick up. She can soon be found at Highlands Farmers Market as well.

Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Icing
This week she was offering 2 pieces of buttermilk fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn muffins and a red velvet cake for $15. The chicken was super crispy on the outside. The skin was coated in a delectable seasoning - KFC could never be this good. Inside the meat was perfectly cooked, moist and tender. Both pieces were incredibly large, almost the size of Moo, and so tasty that the male human kept stealing more from my plate.

The mashed potato was velvety smooth and rich. The green pepper jelly, which I'd never tried before, was mildly sweet with a hint of spice, perfectly complementing the corn muffins. The male human was incredibly excited for the green pepper jelly. Something that his mother used to make as a child, he constantly looks for it at farmers markets (for the 5 years I've existed anyway) and has never been able to find it. Lastly the red velvet cake, although dense was not overly sweet, perfectly paired with a cream cheese icing.

One can tell everything is made with love and I definitely got a lot of food for my money. Give Creole Envie a whirl, you won't find this kind of food in too many places in #yeg.

Updated June 30, 2012: Creole Envie now has a store front located on Stony Plain Road where you can eat in or pick up food to go!

Update November 9, 2012: Creole Envie has a new restaurant where you can get lunch, dinner or brunch! Check it out in the Highlands neighborhood! She also does special chef's tables by request only!

Update November 16, 2012: I visited Creole Envie at their new location last night and the food is solid! The alligator sausage was juicy and mildly spicey, the grits were cheesy and smooth, and the chicken and waffles were two meals in one! The chicken was moist and tender inside, and incredibly crispy on the outside, full of flavor and an extremely generous portion! The sweet potato fries with aioli were my favorite! The fries were crispy and well seasoned, while the aioli had just the right amount of heat to give it a good kick. So far the best sweet potato fries I've tasted in Edmonton (and I've been looking long and hard for good sweet potato fries and dip). Definitely go visit, but don't forget to make a reservation as it was pretty busy in there and there is limited seating!
