Tres Carnales Introduces Edmonton to REAL Mexican Tacos

So much to choose from!
Nothing is more fun than a Tweet Up that involves food. On this particular evening, my entourage and I met up with @thepolishviking and @AddieRaghavan at Tres Carnales. Although @AddieRaghavan and I hadn't been yet, @thepolishviking had already written a story for Vue Weekly which had been published that very day. Her account of our tweet up can also be found on her blog, Dine and Write.

Surprisingly good Mexican soda
Although they have a small menu, what they do is quite unique in Edmonton (#yeg). They have about 7 flavours, which you can choose to have as a taco, a quesadilla or a torta (Mexican sandwich). They also have a few side dishes and soups to choose from as well.

Tacos Al Pastor
We opted to try tacos Al Pastor, consisting of slow roasted marinated pork, topped with onions, sitting on a soft taco. The generous helping of moist pork contrasted by the crispy onions could barely be contained within it's taco wrapping. This was accompanied by baked beans and a fire roasted pineapple and habanero sauce, which was both surprisingly sweet and spicy. We also had the Pollo Asado as a quesadilla. The marinated grilled chicken was surrounded by a mild cheese and held together by a crispy grilled tortilla. The Rajas Con Creme in taco form was probably our favorite of the night, with sweet corn drenched in a crema sauce.

Sweet Cebollitas
We were also treated to a wonderful surprise that evening. Cebollitas, which resemble giant spring onions that are apparently horrendously difficult to find here, not to mention expensive. Grilled on the flat top until they are caramelized, they are surprisingly soft and sweet, oozing out when you take your knife to it.

We will definitely be returning to try out other items on their menu, and to let their chef Edgar free style for us!
